We’re all well aware of General Motors’ failed airbags in millions of “should’ve been” recalled vehicles. In early September, the US Justice Department came up with a deferred prosecution agreement to resolve the issue. Even though the agreement included a settlement, it also allows for all of the charges against General Motors to be dropped pending payment. To make matters worse, it holds absolutely no single individual responsible for the fatal errors made.

General Motors Airbag124 fatalities to be exact. That is, 124 deaths caused by the faulty airbags in GM vehicles, which stayed in the possession of consumers for two years while GM was admittedly aware of the defect. Yes, you read that right; last month, GM admitted to being aware of faulty ignition switches in 2004, but did not conclude the switches could cause airbags to fail until 2012. Then, the auto giant hid its knowledge of the defective airbags until 2014, when it finally recalled the 2.6 million automobiles affected.

The Justice Department valued those 129 lives (and the millions of other put at high risk) at a meager $900 million. Pocket change for the largest auto maker in the United States. GM is also required to hire an third party monitor to oversee its safety department. One would think such a monitor should be a standard requirement, not a punishment. If GM complies with these demands, the Justice Department will dismiss ALL of the charges. Wow.

To clarify, that means GM will be allowed to plead “not guilty” in a court of law, regarding the knowledgeable negligence of safety concerns that lead to 124 deaths. This is sad proof of just how much control “The Man” has over our people and our government. Moreover, the Justice Department did not hold any individuals accountable for these massive ethical violations. How does our government expect corporate executives to value peoples health & safety over a dollar bill if they do not have accountability? They will not, which means these tragic events will continue to occur and more lives will be jeopardized.

Although the Justice Department has been talking quite a bit lately about cracking down on corporate criminals, they are clearly failing to act. This should concern the common citizen because it means big corporations in widespread industries – car makers, airlines, cell phone & computer producers, hospitals, and more – will not shy away from their ability to abuse and misuse consumers. Law suits and complaints will be easy to sweep under the rug, or pay a less-than-fair compensation to get rid of.
